What got you into forums?

What was the first forum you visited and used?

Forums are really better than social media. You would meet people that are like family. I like how everyone assists each other unlike social media. I haven't even met any of my friends on forums but it feels like I know them already.

I totally agree with this.

I always feel like a more family-like environment is on forums.

Social media is way too viral. You post something, and it's irrelevant in 24 hours.

I checked out the old G4 video game cheat board and I loved talking to everyone and before you knew it, I had my own forum for over ten years now

I was on this Bible forum. What's funny is all these racists were on there and I was debating them. I never encountered people like that close up. This was in 2002.

I created a website using WebTV in the 90s (eventually became MsnTV) about gothic stuff. Yeah... LOL I used to be goth. It's funny because I'm so southern sounding that you'd think I live in the Alabama boonies LOL.

Anyways, someone suggested that I make a goth forum. I found phpBB version 1 and tinkered with it but then they shortly released version 2 and that started it all for me.

I'm having a hard time remembering how I cane across forums... but my earliest memory was when I was a huge star wars fan back in 2001 and I believe Lucas Arts had some sort of forum part of the site and I didn't quite know what to think of it at the time. Mind you I was 11 so my computer skills were very basic with that AOL Dial up stuff. Anyway, I think I enjoyed interacting with most of the people there and it was fun chatting back in forth in the PMs when we couldn't find a certain forum to chat.

Wasn't until 2004 when I got really into boards. I looked up to vBulletin 3 as the "Magnum Opus" of forum software, and it kind of was because if you had a site with vbulletin you had a larger advantage over others. I remember to this day I wanted a license so bad but I was just a teenager with no job. If I wanted to make a huge board I'd have to use places like "create free forum" and just use a phpBB board... Oh man those were the days.....
