I still do just links where I can put them and asking for people to link back to my site, I think its a practice that still works.

Yeah it can work.
If the links are set to no-follow, it's not always that beneficial for search but people can still find your website.

Search engine is only needed for new sites, I would like actual humans to follow the link.

I think massive advertising from social media would work but I lack the budget now and I'm recovering from recent personal tragedy (not related to internet).

It's more than just advertising, though.
You have to fine-tune who sees your ad. You have to get the copy right. You have to present value.
Ignore all that, and you'll pay for an ignored ad.
