XenForo is my favorite. It seems to have a lot of nifty features and ease of use and is styled quite nicely.

What’s your opinion of customer support, vBulletin vs. Xenforo?

Side note: for freeware, I go with SMF.

So far, vBulletin support has been decent. Quick enough and respectful. I feel the same with XF. No real bad comments about either of them - for me at least. I can't speak for others.

I always try to figure it out myself before I request support.

Mine is Xenforo. I used to love phpBB but Xenforo is so much better.

I have to go with XenForo as well. I have not tried woltlab, and that looks somewhat promising.

I do have to say though, XenForo has been lacking for quite some time. I would say the entire 2.0 branch is mediocre. Invision is doing some amazing things in v5, but their pricing is ridiculous, AND they may get rid of self hosted come v6, so the future is uncertain for them IMO.

I also recently done a few projects with phpbb for the hell of it, and my lord, has that software aged. Aged badly too.

Woltlab has been around for ages. I think it was free at one time, back when they called it Burning Board. That was some time ago.

It's the cheapest paid solution I think.

The most basic thing seems to be. How does it compare to VB's offer?

Not very well. To have the features that VB6 offers, you have to pay extra for each addon.

$484.51 for Woltlab and their official addons.

$179 for vB6 community suite.

My favorite as follows:

License:
  1. Invision Power Boards
  2. vBulletin 3x Series
  3. Xenforo
  4. Woltlab Buring Board (but dang that is soooo over priced!)
  5. vBulletin 5/6 series. (When vB 4x series got released and Kier left Jelsoft Enterprises to make Xenforo, vB as a whole went down hill.)
Note: I personally think vBulletin is a OK software suite, but man did they fall hard after the 4x series came out. I like where they were going with it but it was just messy and pushed out too fast. Invision surpassed them in code and features by a long shot, they even kept their customers in great standing with a very healthy community even to this day. Call me an IPB Shill all you want but as in terms of friendly UI and UX they are the dominant in that sector. Xenforo on the other hand is great, but its not user friendly as much as IPB is.

Free:
  1. SMF
  2. MyBB
  3. phpBB3
  4. Ikonboard...?
Note: These software's are going strong except for Ikonboard which was discontinued some time ago. But these were the greats back in the day. There were several others but sadly they came and went and the sites no longer available such as ElectronBB. Does anyone remember Forum Matrix? it was a site where you can compare and discover different forum platforms.

I remember Forum Matrix. I haven't thought about that site in forever!!

That and Post Loop.

I just found Forum Matrix, that post has me thinking about it... And well, it is still up a decade later. Had a visual update to the layout. However, if you go to compare software say like: vB Vs Xenforo Vs IPB all their versions and information is sorely out dated. Doesn't seem like they are updating it much anymore.

I see that now.

I wonder why it's still up. I'd understand if they put ads on it but they're not there from what I can tell.

At this point, it's just burning their money for domain and hosting since it's entirely outdated.

My guess that they probably just have it on their backend or subroutine server and forgot it exist. Looking at the Imprint page it is owned by a German Company that goes by CosmoCode. They build corpo websites and third party applications for companies, so owning their catalog of domains probably isn't noticeable enough in their funds to even care. The person behind the project abandoned it it seems... and what looks to be anywhere 14 or so years ago. Just going off the fact when you compare software and when it was last updated. Just a hunch, they probably forgot they own the domain and its public. Lol Betcha if you go to their corporate site and shoot them an email and mention it they most likely shut it down for good. OR they may preserve it, who knows?

Who knows. They might have so many websites that they just keep auto-paying everything.

I voted for Xenforo because that's what I am using. I also like SMF.
